Why More Clients Isn’t the Answer (and What to Focus on Instead)

by | Jun 22, 2026 | Podcast

What if the path to growing your therapy practice has nothing to do with adding more clients to your caseload?

If you’ve ever come home from work so drained that all you can do is crawl into bed, this episode is for you.

Today’s guest, Jenny Melrose, helps therapists stop trading time for money by turning the psychoeducation they’re already teaching in session into digital products and services they can sell while they sleep.

Jenny isn’t a therapist herself — she’s a former inner-city teacher who built a successful food blog back in 2010 (before Pinterest and Instagram existed), sold it in 2019, and now helps practice owners apply those same marketing principles to grow their revenue without working more hours.

A lot of therapists assume that the only way to make more money is to fit more clients into the week. But that thinking is exactly what leads to seeing 36 clients, hitting a wall, and having to take two weeks off just to recover.

Jenny shows you a different path — one built on niching down, creating supplemental resources, and building a real relationship with your audience through email.

This Episode Answers…

1. Why isn’t getting more clients the answer to growing my practice?

Because there are only so many hours in your day. When your only revenue stream is one-on-one sessions, every dollar you earn requires another hour of your time — and that math eventually breaks you.

Jenny watched her therapist clients come to her exhausted, going straight to bed after work, with nothing left for their families. The fix wasn’t filling more spots on the calendar. It was creating products and services that could serve people outside the therapy room — courses, workbooks, group intensives — so their expertise could reach more people without their physical presence in every interaction.

2. How do I figure out what digital product or service to create?

Start with two questions: Who do you love working with, and what are you teaching them over and over again?

Most therapists already know the “how.” They’ve been breaking down the same psychoeducation in session after session — boundaries, communication frameworks, parenting strategies, ADHD support. That repeated teaching is your product hiding in plain sight.

Jenny shares examples from her own clients: a couples therapist who built a workbook and group intensive around relationship boundaries, and another who created a journal for new parents covering the conversations they need to have before baby arrives. The common thread? Niche down hard, identify what your ideal client is actually searching for, and build a resource that supplements (not replaces) the work you do in session.

3. Why does my email list matter more than my social media following?

Because social media is rented property. Your Instagram account can get hit by an algorithm change overnight. Your followers aren’t really yours — they belong to the platform.

An email list is different. When someone gives you their email address, they’ve raised their hand and said, “I want to hear from you.” That’s a relationship you own, and it’s where the trust gets built over weeks and months — long before someone is ready to book a session or buy a course.

Jenny recommends offering a free guide or resource (a lead magnet) that explains the why behind a problem your ideal client is facing. That’s how you start growing a list of people who already know, like, and trust you by the time you’re ready to launch something new.
