by | Jul 2, 2019 | Podcast, SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Every therapist wants their clients to be able to find them via SEO.

SEO (or search engine optimization) is the process of improving the chances that you’ll get traffic from search engines like Google.

It helps increase the likelihood that the people searching for help in your area of expertise can find you.

More free traffic from Google means a better chance of getting more clients.

But SEO can be incredibly confusing.

There’s a lot of information out there and there’s a lot of factors that can affect how high on the list of search results your website appears when someone types in a search term related to your private practice.

But one of the main factors (and where a lot of search engine optimization begins) is with a “keyword”.

To help us understand the basics of using keywords properly for SEO success, I’ve interviewed Dr. Marie Fang from Private Practice Skills.

Keywords & Why They Matter for SEO

You may be wondering, “what exactly is a keyword?”

A keyword is simply a word or phrase that someone may type into Google.

Something like, “couples counseling in Atlanta” or “how to cope with anxiety at work”.

Maybe you specifically help clients in your area with couples counseling or coping with anxiety, so you’d want your website to show up, ideally on the first page of the search results, when someone types those phrases in.

Search Engine Optimization is the process of discovering which keywords work best for your business and then making sure you’ve got great content on your website that will tell Google you’ve got the best information for what the user is searching for.

I like to treat keywords more like topics.

Once you’ve identified the topics that you want clients to come to you for, you can begin to create specialty pages and blog posts that dive deep into those topics.

Doing so will help your keyword naturally appear throughout your website.

How To Find The Best SEO Keywords For Your Private Practice Website

One of the first questions I get about SEO is “how do I find keywords?”

What Dr. Marie does so well in this episode is to break down the steps to help you decide what keywords will work best.

She suggests that your keywords include the following criteria. It should be:

  • A term relevant to your niche or specialty
  • A term with a relatively high search volume
  • A term with relatively low competition (not a lot of other people are using it)

The great news is that there are some free tools (linked below) you can use to nail down the best keywords for your private practice.
